Tool 11

The tools that I will use include dropbox, google docs, and poll everywhere.  I plan to use poll everywhere to do whole-class review of multiple choice problems before a test.

The main change that I see is that I can use tools to do more asynchronous learning.  So that I don't always have to be in front of the kids in our classroom for them to learn.  I think some of the other things that 11 tools suggests, like chatting with kids in other countries, applies more to subjects other than math.

I learned that there are a huge number of web 2.0 tools available for free that allow people to share information with others.

Tool 10

Three things I want my students to know about DC:
* effective methods to search for and check veracity of information on internet
* understand that a lot of content is provided free or paid for by advertising but that there is a lot more information available that has to be paid for by subscription or other means
* students should be aware of hazards of giving personal information on the internet

I work with the LA/SS/Science teachers on my team to be sure students are taught DC.

Tool 9

I like one of the listed sites: Manga High, and one other website that I have used before: Mathplayground.com.  Both of these sites have math and logic games and puzzles that challenge students to use reasoning and problem solving skills.  It is important to make students accountable for their time and activity at a station.  I liked some of the suggestions given, such as having students describe what the did and reflect on what they learned from the game or activity.

There were several math ipad apps in the EdTech list that I want to try and see whether I can incorporate them in a lesson.

Tool 8

I learned about edtech and the list of approved apps.  I expect I will have students play some math games on the devices.  There are some good ones that challenge students logic and spatial reasoning.

Tool 7

Project will be to collect data from other 8th grade classes at Cornerstone and perhaps one other school (Westchester), probably using google docs.

The objective is for students to learn (more) about statistics and data analysis.  Students will choose something they want to measure, for example the music tastes of other 8th graders.  They will create survey questions in a google doc spreadsheet, and ask other classes to answer the questions.  Once they have the data, they will create pie charts, frequency distribution charts, scatter plots and make observations/conclusions about the data.

Will do this in April or May, depending on testing schedule, etc.

Tool 6

I think this would be a good way to quickly get close to 100% serious participation in class.  But I would hide the instant results aspect from students otherwise some wait to see the consensus answer and choose it.

Today's meet is extremely easy to use.  I thought of having students collaborate on completing an assignment, like completing a worksheet via todaysmeet to see how they organize the work and share information.

I think this would be fun to use every once in a while.  Downside I saw both with student using it and a classroom of teachers using it is some enter silly, nonsense, off-topic comments and the activity degenerates after a few minutes.

Both of these programs have a cool factor.  I might have the kids create something in wordle.  I don't see using prezi because it seems to require a lot more time and effort compared to power point for an equal amount of content.



Tool 4

I've used google docs to let students create work and share it with me.  I did this mutiple times in the 6th grade computer literacy course and we did it in our core classes during the passion based learning project.

Regarding fair use law, teachers have a lot of latitude to use parts of copyrighted materials, but they can not make copies of entire works.

I'm happy to learn about dropbox as I spend a lot of time creating presentations, quizzes and tests at home and email them to my computer at work.  I think dropbox could be more efficient on larger files that I send back and forth over several days while I'm creating them.

Tool #2

My comments on other blogs were a bit forced - to complete this assignment.  I guess if you frequent certain posts and get to know the bloggers and regular commentors, you might find more value in contributing.

One blog I really liked was blog.mrmeyer.com  which is a math teacher's blog.  Interesting posts and interesting comments.  But some of the comments were really long (longer than the original post).  Where do people find the time?  Also seems to be the equivalent of "like hearing the sound of your own voice."
